A MEMBER of a British Navy team was saved from serious injury at the weekend at a popular community event by the brave actions of an oil company production manager.

Mick Greig was officiating at the Bahrain Gaelic Games at the Rugby Club in Saar on Friday when he flung himself on top of one of the ladies from the HMS Campbeltown team to save her from being run over.

Mr Greig, 41, from Saar, was presiding over the 'tractor pull' event when he saw the woman slip on the grass. She fell as a turf roller moved towards her. Mr Greig threw himself on top of her in a bid to save her, badly injuring his leg in the process.

He said: "It was either that or she would have been run over. Nothing went through my head - I didn't think about it. Anybody else would have done the same."

The participant was unhurt and the full extent of Mr Greig's injuries was being assessed by medical staff at a Bahrain hospital this week.

The Bahrain Gaelic Games, hosted by the Bahrain Caledonian Society and sponsored by American Express, attracted many supporters and also included traditional games such as shot put, caber toss, tug-of-war, farmer's run and a car pull. It included teams from The Royal Navy, the Black Hash, DHL and The Caley's.

First place went to the Rugby Club, second to Bahrain Black Hash, third to HMS Campbeltown and joint fourth to DHL and the Royal Navy.

HMS Campbeltown, a Type 22 Frigate, having deployed from Devonport, UK, is currently conducting maritime security operations as part of a multi-national coalition task force in the region.

GulfWeekly columnist, The Whisperer, said: "If there was a medal for expat heroes here in Bahrain then one should go to Mick. He selflessly threw himself on top of her saving her from serious injury. Mick was not so lucky and was hurt enough to prevent him flying to Scotland for a short break. The Whisperer salutes you, sir."
