Bahrain helped promote the next Asian Games in China with a conference at the Coral Beach Club in Manama.

The 16th sporting spectacular will be staged in Guangzhou on November 12 - 17 and a 'Road of Asia' tour in the Gulf states is currently taking place.

A Chinese boat, named Princess Cocahin, set sail from Kuwait City last week and began its long voyage towards Guangzhou, where it will dock in time for the event.

Following the 'Maritime Silk Route', Bahrain's Mina Salman port was its first stop on its 19-month journey.

The voyage will also take the vessel to Abu Dhabi, Dubai, India and several other Asian locations where a range of activities will take place such as fun runs, road shows and exhibitions.

The Guangzhou Asian Games 2010 aim to promote peace, friendship and co-operation with the theme of 'thrilling games in harmonious Asia'.

More than 10,000 athletes from 45 different countries including Bahrain are expected to compete in a record 42 different sports - 28 of which are Olympic events - in 56 different venues.

A number of new events will be included such as cricket, dance sport, dragon boat, roller sports and I-go.

Bahrain Olympic Committee acting secretary general Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalifa welcomed the tour and the visiting Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee delegation headed by 'Road of Asia' deputy secretary general Yu Xiaobo and marketing executive Zhang Chunfen.

Shaikh Ahmed said: "Our champions will be ready to defend their titles and we will be involved in at least seven events."

Bahrain won seven gold medals, including the women's 200m which was captured in style by Ruqaya Al Ghasra, at the last Asian Games held in Doha, Qatar, in 2006.
