WITH his ‘stunner shades’ and glistening gold chains, chart-topping American hip-hop sensation, Soulja Boy, came with a mission to turn the party up at Ibrida in Seef.

Even though his flight was delayed and he didn’t make it to his first scheduled set at 10pm, Deandre Cortez, who goes by his stage name, Soulja Boy, lit Ramee Grand Hotel’s hotspot up with his catchy club-banger beats and a shiny, gold Chanel emblem on his shirt.

He welcomed everyone and waved his hands in the air, attracting the crowd to the stage like moths to a flame.

Bursting with energy, he threw down a swaggering performance and started the show with one of his more recent tracks, Whippin’ My Wrist, which featured a catchy hook that reeled the audience in like catfish to a glittering lure.

He followed it up with a set list of 10 of his booming hits, which included: Turn My Swag On, All the Way Turnt Up, Yahhh, Speakers Going Hammer, She Got a Donk, Kiss me Thru the Phone, Pretty Boy Swag and Lifestyle. I waited in anticipation to see when he would perform Crank That – the song that my college friends and I went crazy over nearly a decade ago.

The audience roared as Crank That came on. The track was left for the end of the show, along with the famous ‘Superman’ dance. One guy stood in the front and shook his arms with so much excitement that he almost fell face-first on to the stage – right next to Soulja Boy’s bright white shoes.

Soulja Boy did stay on stage with his crew to perform one last track – current club favourite, Coco, by his fellow rapper OT. Genasis – right before moving to mingle and pose for photos with his fans.
