Mohammed Salmeen emerged the overall winner with a nett-62 gross-70 in the A & E Corona Classic competition at Awali Golf Club on Friday.
Hot on Salmeen’s heels, as the overall runner-up, was Abdulla Mubarak only one shot behind (63/73) in great playing conditions as some super scores were returned.
Prizes were presented by A & E sales manager Manju Thipapanna. The medal competition was flighted, with other prize-winners being – Flight-1: 1st Sun Kyu Kwak (65/75), 2nd Hamad Fares Al Qutami (67/72). Flight-2: 1st Steve Litherland (66/78), 2nd Murray Brown (66/79). Flight-3: 1st Nicky Park (70/100), 2nd Jeff Paa (70/91).
Sponsorship by A & E of Awali Golf Club has been continuous since the 1972/73 season: as part of the requirements by A & E this year, prize-winners had to be present to receive their prizes. Because of this, two players had a surprise: in Flight-2 Bill Scarth (67/83) and in Flight-3 Nicky Bailey (73/98) taking home prizes in lieu of absentees.
Two players not in the prizes had their good play rewarded with a handicap cut, one of whom was the hard-working handicaps & competitions committee member Paul Beaumont. Helping the tournament director, Scarth, to run the competition, Beaumont was heard to claim something along the lines of life not being fair!
