Gulf Weekly We’re up for the ‘cup’!

New official FootGolf ‘goal’ cups will be placed on the Montgomerie course at the Royal Golf Club (RGC) to replace the current buckets that players have to aim for during competition.

The fast-growing sporting craze singlehandedly appears to have saved scores of golf courses around the globe from extinction and it continues to take off in Bahrain at the RGC with attendances growing each week.

The sport combines football and golf with players kicking a football into giant-sized sunken containers on a golf course in as few shots as possible.

The club’s FootGolf champion George Lodge, reckons the new cups will make it easier to score as they are made-to-measure. “It all depends on the condition of a current ‘cup’. So, the answer is ‘yes’ for most of our holes,” he explained. “Even though I don’t believe there is anything that could stop our footgolfers from scoring!

“The new cups are solid ‘world standard’ cups with a cover a golf cart may drive over during regular golf days.”

As reported in GulfWeekly, management at the Riffa Views facility has been delighted by footgolf’s instant popularity.

Stephen Havrilla, the club’s general manager, explained: “We chose to introduce FootGolf to expand the range of activities available to the public and, most importantly, introduce non-golfers to the golf course with a long-term goal of developing them to become golfers.

“We had 28 people play in the opening event and the participants ranged from young families to groups of avid footballers.”

* Supporters are urged to book a spot for Sunday and take the chance to play the ‘buckets’ for the last time. Soon they will be a forgotten history. Call 17750777 to make a reservation.
