Athletes are signing up to compete in a 5km charity run around a corniche in the shadows of two iconic bridges spanning the sea and linking the archipelago.

They will be joined by families of walkers all determined to support Bahrain Cancer Society by entering the ‘Run & Walk 4 Cancer’ on June 3.

The 5.3km route will take a scenic detour between the bridges linking the main Bahrain island to Muharraq, something which event organiser Adnan Al Qassab believes will prove to be an added attraction for participants.

He said: “The location is very picturesque and beautiful, so it will be much more fun to run and walk there. Plus, it’s fairly central and offers easy access.”

Adnan, former chairman of the Bahrain Roadrunners, organised the concept after previously staging both running and walkathon events, but decided to combine the two into one event to attract as many people of differing fitness levels as possible.

He added: “The event is going to be a fun day for all, and inviting both children and adults alike who can choose their own pace increases the spirit of those participating.

“Obviously, the weather is going to be very warm in June so we are starting at 8.30am to avoid the midday sun. Even so, I advise people to do some training beforehand if they aren’t already.

“There will be three water stations along the route as well as two ambulances and a medical team if there are any emergencies ... but for those prepared it shouldn’t be a problem.”

Adnan has been supporting the Bahrain Cancer Society since 2000 and has organised numerous walkathons and charity bazaars to raise awareness and funds for good causes. He has also been the race director for the American Women Association’s ‘Cherry Tree Trot’ for the past 15 years and the event director for the Jawad Business Group’s ‘Jawad Mini Marathon’ for 14 years.

He explained: “After hosting these events for so long, I see myself as part of the community and it’s a pleasure to serve such worthy causes and help the needy. Whatever I can do for them, I will, as I was raised and brought up to respect and provide help for people in need wherever I can.

“I want to give back as much as possible, so I’ll keep on organising these events and doing my part. I hope others of a similar way of thinking will come down and join in too!”

The event is open to anyone aged four and above, and the method of tackling the 5.3km course (either running or walking) is optional. Runs will not be timed and there will be no ‘winners’.

To join in, you must register between Sunday and May 25 and the cost of entry is BD3 for children aged between four and 15, and BD5 for adults 16 and above.
