Escape the trap

It can be disheartening to hit your ball into a bunker from the middle of the fairway and an even bigger shock when you arrive and find the ball against the front face of the trap.

The variety of lofted wedges on the market can be a big help to get the ball up and out, but with the correct technique even a normal sand wedge should be sufficient to escape this tricky situation.

It is common to see a golfer either try to lift the ball high over the lip or panic when coming into impact, resulting in the weight moving to the back foot and contacting the ball clean only for the ball to rocket into the face of the bunker.

In the practice bunker, try placing a towel under your back foot – this really helps to keep the weight on the forward foot through the backswing. As you swing down through impact move off the towel, which makes it easier to get the club into the sand allowing the natural loft on the club to get the ball up and out.
