Mosquitoes are most definitely on the rise in Bahrain, the angry red pulsating bites decorating my trunkles are all the proof I need!

Apparently, I’m not the only one that these irritating blighters have taken a fancy to as I hear similar complaints from friends and neighbours.

Previously, I had been unaware of any mosquito issues in Bahrain, I even boasted that I hadn’t seen or heard a mosquito since moving to Bahrain.

To be honest, I am not surprised after the unusual amount of rainfall we have encountered in Bahrain this year, which has resulted in stagnant pools of water still lying around the island.

Along with the recent hike in temperature, it all makes perfect breeding conditions for our not-so-friendly mosquito.

Reading in the GDN, GulfWeekly’s sister daily publication, that municipal councils have been inundated with complaints of mosquito breeding grounds in certain areas of Bahrain, have only confirmed my fears.

Action has to be taken quickly in my opinion. Standing water needs to be drained, frequent fogging in affected areas, an anti-mosquito campaign put in place and the public need to be vigilant in and around their properties.

We enjoy living in a malaria and dengue fever-free Bahrain and we need to strive to keep it that way.

We can’t bury our heads in the ground. Let’s help to eradicate this wee problem now before it becomes a bigger menace.
