The decision of the people of the UK to leave the EU has turned stock markets highly volatile in various parts of the world. Also, to be noticed is the fall in the GBP against the USD to which even the Bahraini dinar is pegged. However, a weaker GBP/EUR and a stronger USD will impact tourism and real estate as the UK and Europe are major sources for both these sectors.

The Indian Rupee has also depreciated as the GBP weakened, which could impact remittances to India positively.

Meanwhile, a significant change is expected in the business environment, political platform and socio-economic fabric in the EU and, particularly, in the UK.

Promoth Manghat, chief executive officer of UAE Exchange Group.

So far in 2016, more than 2,800 people have died at sea, this is 1,000 more than in the same period last year. Since the beginning of the Médecins Sans Frontières’ (MSF) 2016 operations, MSF rescued 5,653 people during 44 different rescue operations. Only during the days of June 23 and 24, more than 2,000 people have been rescued.

As these dramatic situations repeat in the Mediterranean, European leaders continue to look for ways to push these people and their suffering back to other countries.

The decision few days ago to train the Libyan Coast Guards shows once again how the focus continues to be on deterrence and outsourcing borders control to other countries rather than caring for people in need.

We insist that the only way to end deaths at sea and avoid this dangerous crossing in the hands of smugglers is to provide those in need of safety with safe and legal alternatives to reach Europe.

Tommaso Fabbri, MSF head of mission in Italy.

Bahrain Airport Company (BAC), the managing body and operator of Bahrain International Airport (BIA), would like to inform the public that Car Park B will be permanently closed as of July 28.

Closure of this parking facility is required for the construction works of the new passenger terminal building and as part of the Airport Modernisation Programme.

BAC has recently opened the over-flow car park along Galali Road and is aiming to commission a new overflow car park during the summer holidays, to increase BIA’s existing parking capacity by more than 4,000 spaces and accommodate the expected surge in passenger movement during the summer period, therefore we would like to advise passengers travelling for more than three weeks to use the other long-term car parks (D, E, F, and the Overflow) to avoid any inconvenience in their journey.

We would like to thank the public for their support and assure them of our commitment to maintain efficiency and quality of service throughout our operations.

Noor Faisal, Corporate Communications Officer, by email.
