Irons – solid impact

Every iron in your bag has a determined face angle (loft) that dictates how high and far your ball should fly.

A common mistake I often see is golfers attempting to lift the ball into the air as they come into the impact area. This can lead to a variety of poor shots including striking the ground before the ball, hitting the top of the ball and weaker shots that come up short of the intended target.

The key is to return the club back to impact with the same amount of loft that was evident at address. This can be achieved by striking the ball with a downward blow and the grip-end slightly forwards at impact.

A great drill is to place a tee halfway into the ground at a slight angle and taking soft swings trying to drive the tee into the turf instead of lifting the tee out of the ground.
