Bahrain’s world record-breaking gold medallist Ruth Jebet landed in Bahrain on Sunday after her outstanding exploits in Rio and Paris.
Fresh after winning Bahrain’s first ever Olympic gold medal in the 3,000m Steeplechase and narrowly missing out on a new world record by a second, she raced into the record books a week later at the Paris Diamond League meet.
She set a new benchmark of eight minutes 52.78 seconds to crush the previous time by six seconds.
Jebet said: “At the Olympics, I only wanted the gold medal. There are many chances throughout the year to break the world record, but how many chances do you get at winning an Olympic gold? I paced myself and came very close to both, but I knew my time would come and it did a week later in Paris.
“I’m so proud of my achievements and I will have a little break now and then come back even stronger to try and better my time.”
Ruth was joined by women’s marathon silver medallist Eunice Kirwa before both were whisked off to a royal reception.
