Gulf Weekly Surprising flops but horror and musical flicks score at box office

Family film Monster Trucks didn’t top the charts as expected when it debuted in the US, while Ben Affleck’s Live by Night and Martin Scorsese’s Silence suffered moribund national expansions.

Their failures will lead to tens of millions of dollars in red ink for the studios that backed them. Sleepless, an action-thriller with Jamie Foxx, also suffered an underwhelming opening, getting lost in the onslaught of new releases.

Amidst the carnage, Hidden Figures retained its box office crown in its second weekend of wide release. It has faced stiff competition from La La Land, highly-rated in last week’s Film Weekly review.

Also check out The Bye Bye Man which has received a strong reception. It’s a horror movie about college students grappling with a deadly supernatural figure. Most analysts expected Patriots Day about the Boston Marathon bombing to soar too.

Audiences gave the film a rare A+ cinema score rating.
