Gulf Weekly From a tent to major stores in two kingdoms

Desert Designs, a furniture store which started business in 1990 in a desert tent and today boasts a flagship storefront on King Abdullah Street in Al Khobar, has opened its first outlet outside Saudi Arabia in Galleria Mall, Zinj.

This week’s opening ceremony featured a live musical performance by guitarist and composer Jason Carter, who produced a documentary about Bahrain’s pearling industry, and artwork by popular artists Huvil and Ramah Hussaini.

A family business established in 1990, the store offers home décor products, including furniture and carpets, many handmade, and also fashion accessories such as abayas and jewellery pieces. It ranges from tribal Bedouin offerings to modern executive gifts created to keep the heritage of Islamic design at the forefront.

The store also hosts its own contemporary art gallery, providing a platform for both upcoming and known local artists.

Leading businessman Mohammed Dadabhai, representing the mall’s owning company, did the honour of cutting the ribbon.
