MEDICS, pharmacists and nurses will be gathering in Bahrain tomorrow and Friday to put the spotlight on major health issues and highlight the latest developments and best practice in tackling them.

The Bahrain Diabetes and Endocrine Review (BDER 2019), organised by Royal Bahrain Hospital, will take place at the Gulf Hotel Bahrain, Convention & Spa.

Dr Wiam Hussein, senior consultant endocrinologist, Royal Bahrain Hospital, and chairman of the conference board of directors, said: “The scientific committee has put together a comprehensive meeting offering plenty of learning opportunities in the growing and exciting field of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism.

“We have secured participation of high-calibre international, regional and national speakers delivering cutting-edge clinical care. The meeting is also a great opportunity to network with colleagues at regional and international level.”

The latest in available therapeutics and technology will also been discussed.

Glenn Matfin, professor of medicine at MBRU College of Medicine, Dubai Healthcare City, who has a special interest in type 2 diabetes and cardio metabolic risk, will give a keynote lecture on recent advances in treatment.

Parts of the Middle East have particularly high rates of type 2 diabetes, which is related to obesity, sedentary lifestyle and poor diet. The endocrine system is a network of glands that produce and release hormones that help control many important body functions, including the body’s ability to change calories into energy that powers cells and organs. It plays a vital role in whether or not people develop diabetes, thyroid disease and a host of other hormone-related disorders.
