A bedroom is more than just a place to lay your weary head and catch up on much needed rest and relaxation. It’s also a safe haven and retreat from the hardships in life. After all, bad vibes can’t get you when you’re in bed and under the covers!

An average person spends one-third of his or her life in bed, so why not decorate the sanctuary with all the goodies that exude happiness, comfort and peace?

Experts weighed in on what trends to keep for 2019 and what to say goodbye to and one thing at the top of their lists is to savour sweet dreams nestled under sumptuous fabrics.

Interior designer Patrick Ediger believes that upholstering a headboard in jewel-toned velvet will add sophistication and is soft to the touch. It will be a great way to stretch out and wake up to in the morning.

Also, it’s time to bid farewell to dated blue and beige bedrooms, according to interior designer Jess Coony and Danielle Walis. Bedrooms had been dominated by these hues as well as the colour grey. Bedrooms can still be serene with pops of colour such as bold persimmon, warmer whites and rich emerald greens.

As for the actual bed, either go classic with minimal touches as in a bed, side lamps with reading lights, or go modern with straight-lined and curved furniture, no gaudy oversized pieces.

Contrasting coloured accessories in books, candles, vases and artwork can add character to the space too. Expert Maureen Stevens said: “Let’s up the ante and bring on the drama!”

Also, rid your room of hanging posters or signs. Replace motivational mantras and instead give a shout out to family with a framed photograph or piece of art that puts your mind at ease before hitting the snooze button.

No need to go ‘matchy-matchy’ with duvet covers, pillow cases and blankets either, they all suggest.
