The 23rd Annual Island Classic Golf Tournament, organised by the American Mission Hospital (AMH), has been postponed until next year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, writes Naman Arora.

The tournament and gala, which are some of the most exclusive social and community events in the kingdom’s calendar was set to take place from November 5 to 7.

Dr George Cheriyan, AMH chief medical officer and corporate chief executive, said in a letter to sponsors: “This year’s tournament has been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic,

“We were hoping that by next month, we would be clear of the pandemic and the tournament could be safely held.

“In view of the ongoing impact on health of the pandemic, it was prudent that this was postponed to minimise any impact on the health of individuals in the organisation of the tournament and the players.

“This has been done in respect to the countless people who have lost their lives and continue to suffer worldwide.”

The event, held at the private golf course of His Majesty King Hamad’s Saffriya Palace, drew 46 teams and more than 180 golfers last year, raising thousands of dinars for community outreach programmes and free medical check-ups at labour camps.

According to Dr Cheriyan, the tournament will hopefully be held in the first quarter of 2021.
