A Bahraini engineering student has got a head start on his final year studies this summer with a unique internship opportunity at one of the largest construction firms in the kingdom, writes Naman Arora.

Hashem Alsada, a Bahrain University civil engineering student, will be completing his internship at Keller Grundbau tomorrow, and finds himself well-equipped with practical experience and theoretical knowledge gained during his two-month term.

“It has been a unique and exceptional internship experience, during which I learned a lot about piling and groundwork,” the 21-year-old student, who is entering his senior year at the university, told GulfWeekly.

“Site visits, coupled with the theory I learned during my first week, helped me develop a unique understanding for coursework that I haven’t even done in university yet!”

Hashem is the most recent intern to complete the programme at Keller, which has been training interns for the last decade, during their summer holidays.

Keller Bahrain, which has been in the country for more than four decades, will be working in tandem with Bahrain University to identify the best and brightest students in its engineering programme.

“We have been working with Dr Nuha Alzayani, the head of the civil engineering department at the university to identify students who would benefit from the kind of hands-on experience and exposure Keller can provide,” explained Jayaprakash Elango, Keller Bahrain general manager.

“All our interns are partnered up with two supervisors, who also become their mentors during their work term – one at the office and one at the site where they work.

“We also make sure to balance theoretical learning in the office with practical experience in the field, to make sure interns get the best of both worlds.”
