CREATIVITY was in the air at a fashion show held recently at the Royal University of Women (RUW) in Awali.

Three graduating students of the department of fashion design presented their collections in a runway show titled, Moda Mist.

The display was patronised by Her Highness Shaikha Hessa bint Khalifa Al Khalifa and was watched by a diverse audience comprising university faculty, fashion experts, friends, family and members of the media.

The show opened with the designs of Fatima Al Absi. Models sashayed down the stark black ramp in an array of knee and full-length dresses detailed with lace, net and frills.

Romantic shades of yellow, pink, peach and lilac floated down the catwalk with a white wedding gown complete with net train. In the second part of her collection Fatima collaborated with Bahrain-based Lebanese designer Julian and presented evening wear in a muted dark palette encrusted with beads and net details.

Khulood Khalaf's collection was an exciting blend of modern designs with Bedouin jewellery incorporated in the clothes. Attention to detail was apparent with Khulood's emphasis on sleeves in traditional designs. Colourful flowing tops with ethnic details paired with short capris, skirts and harem pants in different fabrics lent the collection a modern twist that was refreshing and innovative. Khulood's play with the traditional jalabiyas in modern cuts embellished with gold and silver embroidery gave a contemporary twist to the ubiquitous jalabiya.

Ayesha Al Khalifa's clothes screamed creativity as headscarves were transformed into scarves and belts and capes were unbuttoned to reveal a contemporary look beneath. Layering was the theme of her collection which was trendy yet with separates which lent it a conservative look. The translation of Ayesha's colourful designs in orange, electric blue, red and fuchsia had a unique and versatile charm.

The three fashion and design students are part of the first-ever graduating class of 19 RUW students and Moda Mist was part of their graduating project. RUW was set up in 2005 and is the first private university in Bahrain with international affiliations dedicated solely to the education of women.
