Fairytale victory for a team that bounced back in the face of adversity

A bunch of talented individuals turned it on at the right time to win the Twenty20 World Cup.

Professionalism and unity are not words associated with the Pakistan cricket team. But they did exactly that and cruised to victory against the fancied Sri Lankans.

Pakistan were not rated to get anywhere near the final before the tournament began. And they did nothing to suggest otherwise when the tournament got underway.

They were convincingly beaten by England and Sri Lanka and it seemed that they would be sent packing off in the Super Eights stage.

The fortunes of one man can be linked to that of his team. Shahid Afridi had done his usual efficient bit with the ball but his batting seemed to become a major embarrassment.

The last time he crossed 50 in any form of cricket was nearly two years ago. Boom Boom Afridi had turned into a swish, rattle and roll hara-kiri expert. A string of ducks in the tournament confirmed that.

In the crucial match against New Zealand, Afridi contributed an unbeaten 29 after being promoted in the batting order in his team's clinical disposal of the Black Caps.

That was the turning point for Pakistan. Confidence began to return and there was hope.

The favourites, South Africa and Sri Lanka were, meanwhile, crushing everyone in front of them.

Pakistan had to unite and fight. And Afridi was begging his captain Younus Khan to send him up the order at number three.

Younus agreed and Afridi was man-of-match in both the semi-final and the final.

Pakistan deserved their victory. It brings joy to the millions of Pakistani fans who have been bogged down by security concerns at home. Being ostracised by the cricketing fraternity has not helped.

South Africa will find it very hard to shake off the choker tag now. They did all the right things and were cruising towards a spot in the final.

Sri Lanka will be disappointed. They looked the team of the tournament with their excellent batting and awesome bowling. But they were undone by the same two factors which got them to the final.

Defending champions India played badly and never looked like a champion team. They seemed more distracted in counting the cash they raked in at the Indian Premier League than standing up and being counted in the tournament.

Fatigue was given as a reason. That does not wash because it is the Indian board's greed which has made the Indian cricketer overworked through too many matches.

The West Indies blew hot and cold but did well enough to come out with some respect in the tournament.

England, on the other hand, looked tame and uninspiring.

Ireland surpassed their own expectations while the Netherlands and Scotland had their moments of glory.

But the tournament belonged to Pakistan for their fairytale finish. The Pakistan team should take a bow.
