Gore galore for horror film fans

Slasher/horror movies have been done a hundred times and it's very rare that the audience will get something that they didn't expect or haven't seen before, and sadly this film is no different.

This movie is a new-age version of the 1981 original, but certain elements have been updated for today's audiences. There is more gore and the amazing special effects almost distract from the slightly predictable outcome and horror clichŽs.

The film begins 10 years in the past when tragedy strikes and forever changes the town of Harmony and the people who live there. A young and na•ve coal miner Tom Hanniger, caused a terrible accident that killed five people and left only one survivor, Harry Warden.

Harry managed to stay alive but was left in a deep coma. One year later, on Valentine's Day, he wakes up in a rather bad mood and murders 22 people with a pickaxe before being killed by the police.

A decade on Tom returns still haunted by the initial tragedy he caused and is struggling to make amends. However, after years of peace in the small town, a killer, wearing a miner's mask and armed with a pickaxe, is back on a violent rampage.

Even though Harry is dead, Tom, his ex-girlfriend Sarah and her town sheriff husband, Axel, are terrified that it might be Harry back for vengeance.

The outstanding feature of this film is the imaginative and somewhat sadistic way in which the victims meet their end, think along the lines of Final Destination, and you'll know what I mean.

It may not be the greatest horror movie I have ever seen, or even the best modern adaptation of a classic, but there are flashes of tension, which is a key ingredient for any slasher film. If you want to kill some time (pun definitely intended) this is for you.

Showing in Seef II and Saar Cineplex
