Not quite singin’ in the Bah-rain!

It is amazing how the rain can have such a disruptive effect on traffic in Bahrain.

Just recently, as I was beginning my morning routine before school, I noticed that it was raining.

Normally, I quite enjoy the rain as it represents the beginning of winter, but when we began our journey to Isa Town I was shocked by the amount of traffic. On a normal day, driving to school takes around 20 minutes, yet on this particularly wet morning the journey took almost an hour-and-a-half, and that was after we had tried three different routes!

The reason for the congestion was simple, huge puddles had formed on the roads. The lack of drainage meant that the puddles where so big they were lapping over onto the pavement making it undistinguishable from the road.

Every year we experience the same problem. After a night of heavy rain, roads around Bahrain become flooded, which always causes huge traffic jams.

It’s odd that although it always rains around this time of year, the kingdom is still unprepared to cope with its effects.
