ALTHOUGH I fnd the commercialised and made up holiday of Mother’s Day to be slightly ridiculous, it is always an occasion that my parents and I try to take relatively seriously. Mother’s Day is a celebration honouring mothers all around the world, although it is celebrated on different dates in different countries just to confuse matters.

Most recently it was celebrated in America. For me however, this isn’t the date that we choose to celebrate Mother’s Day. In the UK, it is usually celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent and, not being especially astute when it comes to remembering dates, I rely heavily on my father to remind me of the upcoming event.

We don’t celebrate any differently than other families as the day usually consists of my brother and I presenting our mum with fowers in the morning and then eating a dinner at night together, which my father has cooked entirely himself. It doesn’t appear to be anything particularly special, however, my mother truly appreciates it and it is hardly any added effort on our part.

Looking it up online, I found out that most Middle-Eastern countries, including Bahrain, celebrate Mother’s Day in March. I fnd that it, and Father’s Day for that matter, isn’t distinguished as much here as it is in the rest of the world.

The only recognition for this date can be found in the many card shops, where the section labelled ‘Mothers’ becomes slightly more apparent.
