Chinese automotive brand Geely unveiled its new range of models at Bahrain City Centre starting at under BD3,000.

The unveiling, by International Motor Trading Agency, drew large crowds, eager to catch a glimpse of the line-up, which includes the Emgrand 7, Emgrand X7, Emgrand 8, GC2 and GX2.

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the parent company of Geely, which means ‘lucky’ in Mandarin, acquired Volvo in 2010 for $1.8 billion. Since then, the Chinese marque has gone from strength-to-strength.

In 2011, the Chinese New Car Assessment Programme (C-NCAP) released its safety collision test results, in which the Emgrand 8 achieved a five star rating. Its total score of 49.6 points is the highest-ever attained by a Chinese proprietary auto brand.

The new 1.8-litre Emgrand 7 is the marque’s luxury offering and was developed according to European standards. Through re-testing and adjustment, the engine’s maximum power output and maximum torque reach 102kW and 172Nm respectively. Meanwhile, medium and low-speed torque has been improved by 10 per cent and fuel economy by five per cent.

GX2 is a small crossover which integrates SUV elements and has been designed to appeal to younger drivers. Like the GC2, it adopts the C-NCAP five stars design standard.

The 1.5-litre GX2 starts from BD3,099. The Emgrand 7 starts from BD3,899. The 2-litre Emgrand 8 starts from BD5,499. The 1.5-litre GC2 starts from BD2,899 and the 2.4-litre Emgrand X7 starts from BD5,899.
