Natural play dough

For all the parents out there who are keen on keeping their children healthy and toxin-free, here’s a great idea that will keep you and your kids busy and happy for a long time.

As you may already know, some commercial play dough is toxic for children so it’s best to use a non-toxic version or, better yet, create your own at home! It’s easy to make and it creates a great bonding activity.

To make natural play dough, mix a cup of room temperature water with one teaspoon of food colouring and one tablespoon of regular oil (for example, sunflower oil). You can also add a few drops of essential oil at this point such as orange oil or mint oil if you want to add scent to it.

Mix the liquids then add half a cup fine table salt. Stir until the liquid is well mixed in with the salt. Then add one cup of plain white multi-purpose flour. Mix well with your hands and add more flour as needed if it’s too soft.

And, voila! You have homemade non-toxic play dough that will keep for a few days if stored in an air-tight container in the fridge.
