Youth Talk : Do we appreciate what we have?

Recently, it has become apparent that I have been taking Bahrain for granted.

However, it wasn’t until the past week, when we had family friends visiting, that I truly realised how amazing this small country is.

We went out to the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa resort, which, in my opinion, is one of the most relaxing places on the island.

Here we decided to try out some jet skis for the first time. Aside from falling off many times, the experience of soaring on the clear seas at high speed, whilst glancing at the scarlet horizon in the distance, really resonated with us. Contrast that to walking in the miserable rain in the UK on your way home from school.

We also set off on cycling routes around the island, exploring the vast contrast between the barren desert, the local villages and their communities, and rode on to the vibrant and international city which is Manama.

Where else could you experience such diversity in a small place?

Most expats come to Bahrain to a swimming pool, a gym and a vibrant community of like-minded people searching for a new life but probably don’t appreciate all that they can find here. However, once they return home they often regret leaving almost straight away.

My sister, for example, left last year for university in the UK and at the time couldn’t wait to leave ‘this barren desert’ as she called it.

Three months in and she now misses the kingdom. Bahrain isn’t such a barren desert after all, it’s only barren if you don’t go out and explore it.

Just take a look around as there is an array of activities on offer that many people could only dream of experiencing back home, all within driving (and cycling) distance. I’ll see you there!
