2016 will see the return of golf to the Olympic programme for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as highlighted in GolfWeekly in recent issues.

It is the first time that golf has been played at the games since 1904 and has only been staged on two previous occasions - in Paris, France in 1900 and St Louis, US in 1904.

Sixty men and sixty women from 41 nations will battle it out over 72 holes of stroke play golf to determine the 2016 Olympic Golf Champion.

There have been a number of critics, who feel golf should not be part of the Olympic programme and that many of the well-known players have little interest due to there being no prize money and no official golf ranking points on offer. However, if one looks at the biennial Ryder Cup matches, which offer nothing more than the pride in personal performance and in representing your continent, it is the most competitive and passionate event in golf. I am sure the golf played at the Olympics will be a great spectacle and will go a long way in promoting the game.
