A group of teachers from Bahrain recently travelled to Egypt to play in the annual THUGS (Thursday Golf Society) tournament hosted by Sokhana Golf Club.

Nine players from St Christopher’s School were joined by one representative from the British School of Bahrain who unfortunately broke his arm before the trip so couldn’t participate in the on-course action.

After a three-hour flight to Cairo the players were whisked away to the Jaz Little Venice boutique hotel, an oasis on the Gulf of Suez.

The golf course which has hosted major events such as the Red Sea Challenge, Mediterranean Tour and Challenge Tour competitions was described as ‘magnificent’ by the travelling party. Consisting of three loops of nine holes the teachers were able to play 18 holes in the morning and a further nine holes in the afternoon.

The tournament itself featured an individual stableford competition over 54 holes with Kern Wales coming out on top scoring 91 points, closely followed by Conal Smith on 85 with Syed Ali, narrowly pipping Barry Hobday by one point on 78 to 77. The afternoon sessions were shared equally with Team Barry, Team Matt and Team Kern all winning one of the fun competitions, namely a Texas Scramble, 3 Club Challenge and Betterball Matchplay.

“We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Egypt and were royally looked after by all the staff at Sokhana GC and would recommend the venue to anyone looking for a mini-break to play golf at a very favourable rate,” Hobday told GolfWeekly.

Syed Ali won the side contests trophy after a play-off with Tommy Booth and

Kern Wales won the ‘Best Golfer’ accolade.
