Impact is the most misunderstood position in golf, and is one of the main reasons why some amateurs struggle to improve, because they have the wrong mental image about where they are supposed to be during impact with the ball.

The most common misconceptions are that your set-up position is the same as impact and you need to help lift the ball in the air with a scooping action.

Other than your head every part of the body should be forward of the ball at impact. Hit the ball first then the ground – the divot starts after the ball.

Try this drill:

Place a towel on the floor behind the ball - about 12 inches.

Swing to the top of your backswing.

On the way down feel your lower body initiate the downswing by shifting laterally first then rotating.

Allow your hands to lead the club head and the left wrist to rotate and bow to where the back of the left hand is facing the target at impact.

Stop at impact and feel this position, then repeat on the ball swing all the way through the ball.
