As the sun dips below the horizon and the call to prayer fills the air, Bahrain comes alive with the spirit of Ramadan. Cultural festivities begin and guests at the Royal Golf Club (RGC) embark on a culinary adventure at its spectacular ghabga, inspired by the theme of Alf Leila wa Leila, translating to ‘A Thousand and One Nights’ - a collection of Middle Eastern folktales.
Stepping into the club’s poolside venue, we were greeted by an enchanting ambience that set the stage for an evening of indulgence and celebration. Twinkling lights cast a soft glow over the elegant decor, creating a magical atmosphere that transports attendees to a world of wonder and delight.
My dining journey began with a tantalising array of mezze, showcasing traditional Ramadan delicacies such as vine leaves stuffed with savoury rice and creamy hummus. Each bite proved to be a symphony of flavours that indulged the taste buds and whetted the appetite for the remainder of the feast.
As a self-proclaimed carnivore, the grilling stations took centre stage, where I witnessed skilled chefs crafting tender Bahraini tikka and sizzling shawarma that enticed with their savoury aromas and expertly crafted flavours. However, it was the signature lamb ouzi that stole the show for me, with its succulent meat and fragrant rice creating a delectable masterpiece that left a lasting impression, which I’ve since raved about to anyone who’d listen.
Throughout the evening, RGC’s chairman Captain Waleed Al Alawi and his team ensured that guests were treated to the finest hospitality. Attentive waiters ensured that glasses were never empty, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the festivities and camaraderie.
As the night progressed, they were treated to a dessert spread that was nothing short of spectacular. Towering macaroon and meringue creations beckoned, amongst Arabic favourites of kunafa and intricately decorated pastries. My sweet-tooth decided on a slice of their light carrot cake, which I paired with a coffee which provided the perfect ending to an evening filled with delight.
In addition to the bountiful buffet spread, RGC’s Alf Leila wa Leila ghabga offered up an opportunity for guests to experience the club’s commitment to excellence in both hospitality and entertainment.
The evening was further enhanced by traditional live Arabic music performed on stage, creating a festive atmosphere and backdrop that added to the overall enchantment of the event.
Moreover, Royal Golf Club’s recent success in hosting the DP World Tour earlier this year underscores its reputation as a premier destination not only for culinary excellence but also for world-class sports events. The DP World Tour showcased the club’s dedicated commitment to both sports and hospitality, attracting international attention and further solidifying its position as a leading venue in Bahrain. This successful event serves as a testament to Royal Golf Club’s versatility and ability to deliver exceptional experiences across various domains, making it a sought-after destination for both sports enthusiasts and connoisseurs of fine dining alike.
In every aspect, from the impeccable service to the exquisite cuisine, the ghabga exceeded all expectations. Whether you’re a seasoned food connoisseur or simply seeking a memorable evening out, this event promises a truly magical experience.
All of this came at an incredibly reasonable price of BD15 net per person, making it not only a feast for the senses, but also one that provides great value for money. With such an array of delicious offerings at such an affordable price, guests can indulge in a decadent evening without breaking the bank.
