In anticipation of business returning to usual upon the lifting of current Covid-19 restrictions, work is underway to open the kingdom’s first transit hotel featuring short term pods, operated by the Gulf Hotel Group, at the new terminal of the Bahrain International Airport (BIA).

The Bahrain Airport Hotel (BAH), located on the airside of the new BIA near departure gate 15, will offer checked-in passengers an opportunity to rejuvenate with a short term stay or use of its spa facilities.

Gulf Hotels Group CEO, Garfield Jones, commented during the group’s 50th annual general meeting: “The group has signed a joint venture agreement with Gulf Air Group Holding to develop the new transit hotel at Bahrain International Airport. Work on the 83-unit property is in full flow and is expected to open for business later this year.”

This is the first hotel in Bahrain with pods or capsules, chambers roughly the length and width of a single bed, with sufficient height for a hotel guest to crawl in and sit up on the bed. The pod will also offer amenities including WiFi, power outlets and soothing surround sound, giving travellers a short-term sanctuary to recharge their personal and electronic batteries.

The concept originated in Osaka, Japan in 1979 and gained popularity over the last few years as an affordable short-term stay option for businessmen and travellers.

In addition to state-of-the-art pods, the BAH is equipped with compact rooms, standard rooms, family rooms and a room for the physically challenged as well as a five-star spa and mini-gym.

Fares Yactine, area general manager at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa, told GulfWeekly: “The Bahrain Airport Hotel will be a very unique concept for Bahrain. We have seen it in some multinational airports but we are looking forward to introducing it in Bahrain for the first time as an option for transiting and checked-in passengers at the new modernised BIA.”
