GIRLS and boys football teams playing for a school in Bahrain in a regional competition have returned home triumphant winning their respective cup finals as well as a host of individual accolades.

Both St Christopher’s teams are this week celebrating their successes in the highly-competitive 2015 British Schools in the Middle East (BSME) Under 13 Games hosted by The British School of Kuwait which attracted 11 international schools.

Rob Subbiani, head of PE and director of sport at the senior school, who accompanied fellow members of staff, Mark Little, Hilary Rowark and Danielle Sheppard, to the event, said: “First place for both teams! I was delighted with the very high standard of performances of the individuals and the teams.”

Twenty-four very excited students from Years 7 and 8 arrived late last Wednesday primed ready for some tough competition. The games were formally opened by Matthew Lodge, British Ambassador to Kuwait, in front of 300 students and assembled dignitaries.

On the second day of the multi-sport tournament, the girls and boys went to different locations for the basketball (boys) and netball (girls) competition and finished in fifth position in both events.

On the final day, the school’s footballing prowess came to the fore. The girls scored more goals in their pool games than the total number of goals scored by all the teams in the other pool games and the girls swept the board to beat The British School of Jeddah 6-0 in the final.

The boys’ final was a close affair and went to penalties with St Christopher’s clinching victory over The English School (Kuwait) with a hard, low strike by Aiden Shretta after both sides drew a blank in normal playing time. George Axtell, 13, boys’ team captain, said: “The Games where great fun and I was very pleased with the results, particularly our tense football final.”

Player of the football tournaments were both awarded to St Christopher’s students, Shretta in the boys and Erica Moolman in the girls, with Danielle Wilkinson winning the top goal-scorer accolade with 12 strikes in seven matches.

As a result of the two teams’ performances, St Christopher’s moved up the table to take second place in the games overall.

Students involved were Majeed Al Nooh, Colby Altman, Charlotte Axtell, George Axtell, Kareem Bagaeen, Amy Brereton-Stuart, Liam Chapman, Callum Dawson, Bruna Elias, Stephanie Hall, Mitchell Haseid, Bader Jalal, Jesse-Leigh Baker, Georgina Lewis, Basel Manna, Erica Moolman, Louis Mulleague, Jessica Pickering, Charlotte Pilgrim, Aidan Shretta, Elligh Sissons, Sebastian Timmers, Danielle Wilkinson and Manni Zhang.

Formed in 1982, BSME provides a quality-assured network of schools helping heads and teachers share best practice and keep abreast of the latest educational developments.

BSME runs its own accreditation system, annual head teachers’ conferences, continuing professional development programme of over 100 courses per year and a range of inter-school sports, music, arts and other events.
