THE signs are there for all to see – these bays are for public buses only. Yet, it appears, no-one seems to care and little is done to enforce the notices.

Just imagine parking at a bus stop in a major capital in Europe. The fine would be exorbitant and the vehicle would be towed miles away to a compound which would only be open during regular working hours with an additional charge for release.

Nowadays, few would dare to risk it. Public transport rules. In Bahrain, buses have to stop in the middle of the road to allow passengers to board and alight, which is dangerous, and during peak periods just adds to the misery of snarled-up traffic jams.

Why is it acceptable?
