Gulf Weekly Krazy Kevin's Kids Klub

So what’s been happening this week?  I started off with a great night out at the Gulf Hotel last Monday.

I went to see a South African production called “Diamonds and Dust” which featured 12 musicians and singers. It was exuberant, infectious and highly professional, and featured songs from South Africa from the 50s to modern day.
At the end, the audience was up boogying and dancing. My thanks to Sidney and also to the singers and musicians - especially the one I interviewed on my radio show the next morning. She performed a “Click Song” which is singing and somehow clicking the tongue at the same time. Incredible!
Later on in the week I went along to an ‘Audience with Boris Becker’. He was interviewed by my Radio Bahrain colleague; Nads (oops sorry, it’s Nadia to everyone-else) and what an insight into the life of a professional sportsman it proved to be.
Becker became the youngest ever player to win Wimbledon at the tender age of 17, and he said that overnight, he was transformed from being an unknown schoolboy to a celebrity under a worldwide spotlight.
It was very interesting to hear different stories from his life. He stated that he didn’t just play tennis all the time; he also enjoyed football, swimming and basketball. He said it was healthy for the mind and body to have variation and not play just one sport.
Although he was on official business with Riffa Views, earlier in the day Becker went down to the Bahrain Tennis Club and met up with some of our up-and-coming tennis-mad youngsters.  He was scheduled to be there for only 20 minutes but to the delight of the young Bahraini tennis players he spent more than an hour in their company teaching them a few tricks of the trade, playing and coaching them.  He was a big hit with the kids.
One young player told me he was “absolutely thrilled” and although he had not seen Becker play in his prime, he was a “legend” every tennis fan would have wanted to meet.
The star did not disappoint. He also made a dream come true for St Christopher’s School A’level student Nina Paul, left, who met him on Saturday at Riffa Views.
Nina is studying German and as part of a course project had to choose a celebrity from that country to write a speech about.  Last year she chose Becker and never dreamed she would actually get to meet the man.  Nina, 17, said: “The closest I thought I would get to Boris Becker was watching an old video of him being interviewed on Parkinson!”  The bright teenager conducted her interview in German, and added: “He was very helpful and answered all my questions.”
The next day I was invited to play golf at Riffa Views golf club with Boris and 18 other players.  Thanks Hugh (who kept me entertained with his dodgy jokes!) and thanks to my other teammates Emma and Steve. We didn’t win,
but the big boss from
Riffa Michael “Dundee” Braidwood got nearest the hole and won a signed Boris Becker tennis shirt (Watch out it will be on eBay next week. Ha!).
So this week’s quiz question is:
At what age did Boris become a Wimbledon champion?
Easy ‘eh…?...and the gang from Riffa Views are kindly donating T-shirts and caps as prizes.
