Epic science fiction film Avatar: Fire and Ash is out now in theatres.

Written, directed and created by James Cameron, it is the third instalment of the Avatar film series. It is set in the mid-22nd century on Pandora, a lush habitable moon from the Alpha Centauri system.

In the new film, former human Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) encounter a new, aggressive Na’vi tribe, the Mangkwan clan, also called the Ash People, led by the fiery tribe leader Varang (Oona Chaplin).

The films tackle the conflict between the indigenous Na’vi and humans from the Resources Development Administration – a mega corporation which has arrived on Pandora to colonise and pillage it for its natural resources.

In an interview, James pushed back on calling this film a sequel, instead describing the first three films as one saga.

“I think you’ve got a little bit of experience with sequels and how you have to deliver beyond the audience’s expectation, take them from the familiar to the new each time,” Cameron said.

“I don’t think of Fire and Ash as a sequel. I think it was a culmination of a saga. I like ‘saga’ better than ‘sequel’ because a lot of where we were going with the story was in the original architecture of the story,” he added.

“So if you think of this as the third act, I think that’s healthier. As opposed to a typical Hollywood sequel.”
