Gulf Weekly Skin needs protection from UV rays

NOW let’s be truthful, how well are you protecting your skin against the harmful UV rays?

I am sure you are not protecting your face, body, hands and lips to the best of your abilities, considering we are exposed to the sun here in Bahrain on a daily basis. Even when it’s looking overcast you should still wear protection as the UV rays penetrate the clouds.
You may wonder why it is so important to apply a sun factor every day. Consistant damage will not only lead to premature ageing of the skin but it leaves you at risk of developing skin cancer in the long term.
You could be more at risk if your skin is very fair with freckles but if that is not the case if does not mean you can get away without sun factor protection.
If you really want to give yourself a shock like I did, visit Faces store in the Seef Mall. It has a high-tech machine that magnifies your skin to highlight any sun damage under the skin that is invisible to the naked eye.
Even though I am dark-skinned I saw dark spots and uneven skin tone which surprised me as I do use a facial sunscreen.
Between the hours of 11am and 3pm the sun is at its strongest therefore if you are going to sunbathe think trees, shade hats and sunglasses and, of course, lots of sunscreen. Don’t forget to protect your lips; we ladies have the advantage that some lipsticks include an SPF, Max Factor being a brand I can immediately think of.
Dermalogica total eye cream is also my favourite - it has a SPF15 and also contains titanium dioxide.
Ears, necks and hands often get forgotten but these are the areas more susceptible to burning, therefore putting you more at risk.
When choosing a facial sun factor just beware because some can cause irritation due to harsh ingredients. Look for the words titanium dioxide or zinc oxide on the packaging as these cause less irritation and are natural sunscreens.
Children should be monitored when they are out in the sun. Ultra-sun Reflex 30 is an excellent brand for children as it contains UVA 99 per cent and UVB 30 which gives a very high protection for delicate skins.
Once you have had a day in the sun don’t forget to use an after-sun lotion. Try using Lancaster tan maximiser which works by stimulating your production of melanin, therefore prolonging your tan.
Prevention is better than cure, so start today! Apply those sun screens and maybe applying a false tan is a better alternative to baking in the sun if you desire a bronzed look. If you notice any moles or blemishes changing shape, size or colour don’t hesitate to consult a doctor.
Luxury Indulge: Piz Buin 1 day long SPF30
        vs
Bargain purchase: E45 Sun lotion SPF15
It depends on what coverage you desire; Piz Buin is marketed towards fairer skins. E45 is an all rounder for all skin types so price wise it’s a winner.
