Rugby enthusiasts in Bahrain yesterday got a close look at the Webb Ellis Trophy, the rugby union World Cup. The trophy was on display at the Bahrain International Circuit, Sakhir, the Bahrain Rugby Football Club, Saar and the British Club, Adliya, as part of a regional tour. The 15-inch trophy made of sterling silver and gilded in gold is a copy of a cup created by silversmith Paul de Lamerie in 1740. It is named after William Webb Ellis who is regarded as the inventor of rugby after he picked up a soccer ball in November 1823 at Rugby School, England, and started running with it. The trophy has been on a tour of the Gulf with stops in Abu Dhabi and Dubai before reaching Bahrain.
