Where Salsa first originated isn’t completely clear but it’s safe to say that Cuba played a large part in its creation. Salsa in itself is a fusion of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances.

Salsa is mostly a partner dance although there are also some solo steps. It can also be danced in groups of couples with routines involving couples swapping partners.
Although Salsa can sometimes involve travelling across the floor with your partner it is mostly danced on the spot in a small area with partners dancing around each other in a fixed area.
Salsa is danced to a rhythm that lasts for two measures of four beats with the basic steps typically consisting of three steps per measure and suitable dancing music can range from the slower 120 beats per minutes to the faster 180 beats per minute.
The word ‘Salsa’ is Spanish for sauce – most commonly spicy. It suggests a mixture of ingredients, much like the dance.
