For the first time, a woman has won an international Scrabble tournament in the Gulf.
Rohaina Tanveer, a medical technologist from Kuwait, won the Gulf Air Pre-World Scrabble Championship competition at Yateem Centre. Her crucial final match was won by 37 points against 2003 Gulf champion Ricky Gonzalez (Munirah, Saudi Arabia). Peter Rothel, Gulf Air head of marketing, presented Tanveer with a letter announcing her air ticket to Malaysia to compete in the sixth ‘Causeway Challenge’, the Scrabble world’s biggest team contest. The seat in the international team had been reserved for the winner of the pre-WSC tournament, a place which is now Tanveer’s. When she brought her result slip to the scorekeeper’s table, she stammered: “I can’t believe this.”
