Gulf Weekly Station dials up dignity strategy

A popular radio station broadcasting in the kingdom which entertains Bahrain’s Asian community is giving away free tickets to India to allow illegal workers to leave the country with “dignity”.

The move is the latest in a number of promotions launched by 104.2 Voice FM – the multi-lingual broadcaster that has seen listener figures reach more than 400,000 in just 10 months.

“We want Indians to leave the country with dignity. We feel it’s our social responsibility and are very serious about it,” said P N Menon, senior general manager.

The first ticket was given to Indian Padinjarepettil Vijayan, who had been in the government’s transit camp in Hidd for more than eight months.

One ticket a day is being given away to a listener who wishes to take advantage of the government’s immigration amnesty which lasts until the end of the year.

P Unnikrishnan, chairman of SPAC, the Strategic Publicity and Advertising Company, and the man behind the channel which was launched in 2006, added that the station had plans to expand in the Middle East.

At its launch the station was operated alongside Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation and was targetted solely at the Keralite South Indian community.

As the station grew in popularity it began to introduce programmes for a wider and larger audience. Currently, the station has programmes in four Indian languages – Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada.

It is now also aiming to broadcast in Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali and Marathi to expand its reach throughout the Asian community.

There is even a taste of the English language every Thursday when GulfWeekly columnist Krazy Kev makes an appearance after his morning show on Radio Bahrain.

“We have a large music collection from Pakistan, for example,” said Mr Unnikrishnan. “All we need now are people to host these shows.”

The channel goes on air from 7am until 10pm. The hunt for talented presenters continues and the station is looking for people with a good voice, spontaneity and a sense of humour. If you feel you have got what it takes to play radio host, you can call the station on 17270710 for further details.
