At the back of my mind this past week I've been getting mentally prepared for the upcoming Bahrain Relay Marathon. I'll be running, walking and quite possibly crawling the last three kilometres of the Bahrain International Circuit track in aid of the Think Pink breast cancer charity.
'Mentally prepared' is about as far as I've got 'cause although you'd think that foremost amongst my preparations would be getting in some training to ensure I can go the distance, I somehow haven't done nearly as much as I meant to, and my new running shoes still look extremely new.
But I've got my outfit prepared. So I'll definitely look 'good' as I shuffle round the track. I've got a pink wig, pink glasses, pink t-shirt, pink socks and even pink shorts that my lovely wife made using the sewing machine she got for her birthday.
But more about the marathon later...
I learnt something new this past week. I learnt that it's possible to 'work out' and film a TV show at the same time. What are you talking about? I hear you ask. Well, let me explain. On Tuesday we shot the fifth episode of my music TV show 'Music Mania' (don't forget it's on Sundays and Wednesdays at 7.30pm on Channel 55) at the British Club Gym with my fitness (or should that be fatness) Guru Adrian Hunt-Seviour.
For those who don't know, Adrian puts me through my paces regularly in an almost desperate attempt to return me to some kind of shape. I repay the favour by sharing my donuts with him.
Anyway we had a great time! I intro-ed music videos whilst sweating it out on various fitness apparatus; which Adel (the show's director) had great pleasure setting me up on! Strangely he was really fussy about the shots this week... making me do them over and over again!
But, just for something different, I got to turn the tables on Adrian when he foolishly agreed to a 'challenge' 60 second interview for the show. The challenge was to continuously do dips while answering my questions.
He did incredibly well but didn't finish in time, so he 'won' an out of date tin of vegetables.
Thanks going out to Katie his lovely wife for all her help with holding cue cards and for being an interpreter for Adrian's 'Brummie' accent. On Thursday it was Wendy's and my wedding anniversary and I 'celebrated' by going out to work. And it was a late one!
The event was called the 'The Commodores Ball' at the Gulf Hotel Convention Centre and was a special party for a group of people over from Saudi Arabia. The theme was 'Everything to do with Africa'.
On entering, the place was a sight to behold. There were amazing decorations everywhere including a nearly life size elephant and a seven-foot crocodile (made out of polystyrene). Exotic plants gave the event a typically African atmosphere.
A band had been flown in from the UK and I chatted with them about how the night would pan out. They were called "The Right Stuff" and after I talked to Andy (the band leader) I knew that we were in for a great night.
I started off playing 'African' tracks during the meal. There was a speech and then a surprise belly dancer came on - Yasmina - who had the whole crowd clapping with her gyrations.
(I had a go too, 'cos with my four bellys I thought I should be pretty good!)
After she finished I got all the crowd up dancing and then brought on the band.
Their first set was 70's music and they rocked the place. Their next one was all 80's and their finale a mish-mash of hits both new and old.
I had people jumping up and down to all sorts. But the down side was that everybody enjoyed themselves so much I didn't finish until 4am. My head touched my pillow at 5am which was weird because that's when I normally wake up. Some Wedding Anniversary!
The next day (which happened to be Wendy's Birthday) I slept till midday. After waking up and having brunch together as a family I was grateful when Hannah's nap time came around at two - because I had one as well. When I woke again at around 3.30 I felt almost human for the first time that day.
That evening I took Wendy out for a wonderful birthday dinner at Primavera. It was perfect and we had our first chance to chat in days.
The next day (Saturday) it was time for the annual American Mission Hospital charity golf day on the Kings Course. We revived the team of Phil "Yorkie Terrier" Jones, David "I'll play for everyone" Wales and Carl "Get me out of bed" Jamieson, but this year we didn't play as well as we should have and the only consolation was that I got 'the nearest pin' on a side contest - which was funny because I nearly demolished a tree and the ball landed eight feet from the hole! Well done to everyone from AMH for making the weekend a truly memorable and well organised occasion.
Now I've already told you a bit about the upcoming relay Marathon this Friday. More than 150 teams will run for charity in the biggest running event in Bahrain. I decided to see if I could do it and make some money along the way for Breast Cancer Awareness. I'll be running with the British Club team.
Adrian can attest that I've been in the gym a couple of times to 'get fit' but unfortunately with being busy (bad excuse I know) I'm not that well 'prepared'. So, although it's unlikely I'll be setting any records, I will need a lot of support.
On my breakfast show I've started asking for pledges/money and I've already got about 300 Dinars. If anyone reading this would like to contribute please send me an email to krazykevin@hotmail.com . The cause is one that affects us all at some time and in some way and I hope you will dig deep.
All my love
Krazy Kevin
