Highways are not race tracks

It comes as a huge surprise to foreigners and tourists when they come to visit the kingdom and see what kind of roads we have on the island and the speed at which cars travel every single day.

It isn't really a surprising fact that most road accidents these days are due to the reckless driving of Bahraini youth.

What really surprises me is the number of under-aged drivers that exist in our community.

And, sadly, most of those who drive without a license under 18 years of age probably do so with the blessings of their parents.

Anyone who has witnessed a road accident and seen drivers trapped in their damaged cars - or seen bodies lying metres away from the crash, not knowing whether they are dead or alive - will acknowledge that it is an awful sight to behold, no matter what the age of the victim.

However, it is the norm for many Bahraini youth in the early hours of the morning to go speeding down the highways and carry out stunts that are really scary and dangerous in every way possible.

Take it from me guys, I can understand the rush of a speeding car and the exhilaration one enjoys but when it means putting other lives at risk it is simply irresponsible behaviour that sucks.

We are lucky enough to have a real race track in Bahrain - the Bahrain International Circuit - allowing drivers the opportunity to get their kicks in a safe environment.

There's a chance to become professional race car drivers instead of taking to the streets and becoming pathetic killers.
