There is approximately eight weeks left in the academic year for many students. For most of the freshman and sophomore students these weeks will lead up to a fantastic summer vacation spent mostly on free time and leisure.
However, for the juniors, there will be a slightly different scenario. This is the crucial time to study and review what has been taught throughout the year so that they will be able to get good grades on their final semester exams before using those grades in their application documents early next year.
This week I will be focusing mostly on the importance of the application process. But first things first, do not feel pressured about the process since you are not the only one going through it -millions of other juniors around the world are thinking about the future and suffering the same feelings of insecurity and dread.
A common mistake that many make is waiting till the very last minute when it comes to deciding which universities they would like to study at. By now it is best to narrow your choices to four or five universities.
This gives you ample time to decide which is best suited for you and the major subject that you will study.
By the time the summer arrives, make sure you research these universities and perhaps make a decision to narrow the list down to three universities at best.
Therefore, by the first quarter of your senior year, you can send out your applications both by mail and online and get a head start on the rest.
A common mistake again is to wait till the last minute. Remember, the earlier you get your applications in, the earlier you can apply for financial aid and different scholarships.
Many students will also feel worried about the expense of further education and university life. Well, sit with your parents and review your options. Do not leave your parents out of the application process because they should be a part of it and can give you a helping hand.
There are options such scholarships and student loans but remember that you must earn it by working hard and studying to keep up with the competition.
If you are still confused, make sure that you speak with your university counsellor. If you do not have one at your school then go online and ask other students about what can be done - and what should not be done as well. Good luck!
