Dear Stan, This refers to the article 'From the land into the hand' by Anasuya Keshavan (GulfWeekly, April 16-22).
We were very much impressed by the farmers market. This practice needs to be fostered and encouraged and the government should come forward and promote this movement.
Perhaps it could provide the entrepreneurs subsidised loans both for investment and working capital.
The necessary land required could be leased out with periodic renewal.
It could also set up and operate sales counters at various places in the kingdom so that the farming entrepreneurs can easily display their products and allow the public to access and purchase from them and enjoy fresh farm produce.
Similar systems already exist in India. For instance, a co-operative society is being formed by small farmers, funded and monitored by the horticulture department of Karnataka state government.
Collection and sales counters are scattered all over its state capital city of Bangalore.
Let us hope Bahrain also establishes similar facilities for the benefit of its people.

Adliya
