AS consumers become more aware of healthier eating options in the battle of the Bahrain bulge a growing number are taking the Subway alternative to fast food fare.

The SUBWAY restaurant chain, the leader in offering a healthier alternative to traditionally fatty fast foods, has eliminated all artificial trans fats from its core menu.

"At SUBWAY restaurants, we are committed to providing healthier fast food choices for our customers," says Lanette Kovachi, corporate dietitian for the chain. "Removing the small amount of artificial trans fat present in a few of our products is another way to improve the nutritional quality of our menu choices."

The SUBWAY brand was named the number one provider of healthier options in a recent survey of fast food restaurants.

The chain is the world's largest submarine sandwich franchise, with 29,436 restaurants in 86 countries.

Based in Milford, Connecticut, US, and with regional offices in Amsterdam, Beirut, Brisbane, Miami and Singapore, the enterprise was co-founded by Fred DeLuca and Dr Peter Buck in 1965.

Its success in Bahrain has seen the number of outlets grow - and two new ones will be opening soon.

Subways can be found at Seef Mall, Sanad, the Yum Yum Tree Complex on Manama's Exhibition Road, Bahrain Mall, Juffair and Tubli with Sitra and Abu Saiba to follow.
