Thank God, is literally what I said when this epic movie ended. Although it got off to a good start the rest of it was just miserable.
The film is very long, the dialogue is weak with the exception of the special affects which are amazing. That is all I have to say after spending more than two hours in a movie theatre.
It is really bad and I advise people not to go and waste their time.
The movie takes place in New York City, 1985. Somebody is killing superheroes one-by-one and only the costumed crime-fighters of the Watchmen can solve the crime.
Watchmen is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's comic books. Well, since I man not into comic books, I have never read his books or even heard of them. But as a normal member of the audience the movie failed to entertain me.
And most of the scenes were cut because of nudity, so you will miss out on a lot of the conversations which I found very annoying.
The film begins with the murder of Edward Blake by a mysterious killer. A superhero private investigator named Rorschach discovers that Blake was the alter ego of a superhero named The Comedian and, as he investigates the murder, realises someone has been killing other superheroes, mostly from the group called The Watchmen.
The Comedian does not have seem to have any superpowers other than a lot of guns. He wears a mask and cracks one-liner jokes every time he kills people. Since he is bumped off at the beginning of the film you will only see him in flashback.
Rorschach tries to warn the cops but they have other things to worry about. From this point, the movie begins telling the origin stories of various members of the Watchmen.
Night Owl is the first one he tries to warn. Owl lives in a mansion and has all kinds of secret technological weapons. His girlfriend is Silk Spectre.
Silk Spectre's mother was also called Silk Spectre and was also a member of the Watchmen.
The flashbacks are fun, but there are too many which can be confusing at times.
One scene shows a science lab back in the 1940s and a scientist getting killed by radiation, but then he mysteriously reappears only he is blue and he can do whatever he wants.
He can kill people with his mind and he knows everything. At one point he makes himself gigantic and destroys an entire army. This is Doctor Atomic, founder of the Watchmen. But Doctor Atomic is missing and nobody knows where he has gone.
Rorschach thinks he was killed, but retired Watchman Ozymandias thinks that Doctor Atomic is still alive.
Rorschach sets up a meeting with Ozymandias, but before they can meet Ozymandias is brutally murdered.
Ozymandias is a hero, but also a villain because he runs a giant company and he is using all of his powers for profit.
The death of Ozymandias prompts Night Owl and Silk Sepctre to reform the Watchmen.
Up to this point in the movie it is implied that the missing Doctor Atomic is the man behind all the murders, but Rorschach uncovers a clue suggesting the killings are somehow linked to Ozymandias.
He also learns of a sector polar base constructed by Ozymandias in the 1970s. Rorschach and Night Owl confront him about his plan and he reveals that he intends to trigger a bomb that will cause a nuclear war to break out between the United States and the Soviet Union. His excuse is that he hopes to make them come to their senses.
Ozymandias also reveals that Doctor Atomic is not dead, but instead he is hiding in Mars at his secret base there. Rorschach and Night Owl fight Ozymandias, but he is much too powerful and they have to flee.
Realising that the Watchmen can't stop Ozymandias from destroying the world, the trio fly in Night Owl's Owlship to Mars to beg Doctor Atomic to intervene.
Rorschach convinces Doctor Atomic to fly back to earth and battle Ozymandias. When they get back to earth we see that Ozymandias has already detonated his bomb, destroying both New York and Moscow.
Finally, Doctor Atomic confronts Ozymandias, who is angry because his plot has been foiled. They battle crashing through mountains and destroying monuments and fly around the globe. Their confrontation ends back at Atomic's Mars base where Rorscharch plays a key role ... I am not going to say what will happen there, if you are still interested in watching the movie you can go and see it for yourself.
