As the weather heats up and people head out onto the water, Jets Ski suppliers have teamed up with coastguards and other experts to launch a summer safety campaign.

The AJM Kooheji Group and Yamaha Wave Fiesta and Safety on Water campaign made a big splash at the Al Bandar Resort featuring a workshop and followed by marine games at Aum Jaleed Island.

The fun-filled launch began with a safety workshop conducted by First Lieutenant Mohammed Al Sulaiman of the Bahrain Coast Guard, Khalid Al Khan, divisional manager for Yamaha and Sherif Omar, front office manager of Al Bandar Resort.

Mr Al Sulaiman had much to say in terms of how to behave in the water since the weather was not extremely encouraging and there were 120 Yamaha water vehicle owners revving to go.

He informed the riders: "Due to the weather conditions, it is not the appropriate time for cruising let alone jet skiing. It is pretty windy and really risky. Always be aware of the weather before you head out to sea.

"When leaving the dock on a jet ski do not ride alone. Always have a means of communication on you such as your cell phone or travel with a companion either on a jet ski or a boat. Tell people where you are going and remember that Jet Skies are not meant for open sea.

"If you are the type of person that likes to perform tricks, be sure to remember that others are around so try not to disturb them. You should try to avoid performing tricks in the first place as they can be harmful to yourself and others. Make sure you steer clear of shallow waters as the Jet Ski can suck up sand.

"If there is an emergency call the coast guard on 17700000 and always wear your life jacket. I cannot stress that enough because that is the most important factor of riding a jet ski or a boat.

"Also do not ride at night and keep away from fishing grounds."

Following the workshop, riders and water enthusiasts travelled from Al Bandar resort on boats and personal wave runners to the Aum Jaleed Island where Yamaha had organised a number of games and races.

The fiesta included a barbecue and refreshments, four different wave runner races and games that awarded the winners prizes courtesy of LG Electronics, Bridgestone and Yamaha.

Abdul Jabar Al Kooheji, 29, investment placement officer at a bank, from Jasra, said: "I had a great time. I participated in the freestyle event and it was a lot of fun. "I have been jet skiing for 19 years now and think that the best advice I can give to anyone is always wear your life jacket."
