MAKERS of home appliances are continuing their endevours to attract customers demanding 'greener' household products by introducing new innovations to the marketplace.

LG Electronics (LG), for example, has introduced a new side-by-side refrigerator which is specifically designed for large capacity storage and 'top-level' energy efficiency.

It boasts an enormous 617-litre capacity - the volume of approximately 2,460 small (250ml) cola cans - but does not extend beyond the depth of standard size refrigerators.

"There's no doubt that the global economic slowdown has changed our lives in many ways, and we are now seeing people all over the globe modify their eating habits. One of the noticeable changes is that people are much more willing to buy in bulk and store food to keep their grocery bills in check," said H S Paik, president of LG Electronics Gulf FZE. "So, we have designed the new 617-litre side-by-side refrigerator to meet the customer's needs. The new refrigerator is also extremely energy efficient without compromising the freezer's capability to keep food fresher for longer."

LG has developed a slimmer mechanical system to create more interior storage space while maintaining the refrigerator's overall dimensions.

The company says it is taking a proactive approach to the environment and energy use, and the new LG side-by-side refrigerator minimises power consumption and reduces noise with LG's innovative linear compressor technology which drives its piston directly, without rod and axis, to lower energy consumption by approximately 20 per cent compared to conventional compressors and also helps to reduce energy bills in everyday life.

This allows the refrigerator to run on approximately 492 kWh of energy each year, earning the refrigerator an A+ class rating, according to the EU energy label.

Also, a 'vacuum fresh' feature keeps drawers near-vacuum status, creating the perfect conditions to preserve fresh vegetables. The refrigerator prevents waste with a humidity control system, which monitors moisture and keeps it at optimum levels to preserve freshness.
