Firms are enjoying a boom in sales of 3D televisions thanks to rising demand stoked by the World Cup action in South Africa ... and the dedicated coach potato in Bahrain is not missing out on any of the fun.

The finals have been feeding demand for the high-end product that makes images appear as if they are popping out of the screen.

LG Electronics saw a jump in 3D TV sales last month, selling more than 3,000 units at its home in South Korea. It is now releasing 3D models abroad and last week launched the LX9500, which the company claims is the world's first full LED 3D TV at an event organised by brand distributor AJM Kooheji at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel in Manama.

H S Paik, president of LG Electronics Gulf FZE, said: "Thanks to its superb picture quality the LX9500 offers a 3D experience like no other, where instead of just watching scenes, you can actually be part of them.

"Through advanced features LG is already pushing the technological boundaries for 3D. Along with our 3D Blu-ray disk player and 3D home projector, LG is well placed to become a true global leader in 3D home entertainment.

"This new technology is creating visual experiences that offer new opportunities and challenges for educators, manufacturers and consumers alike. With its tendency towards early-adoption of new technology, the Middle East is on the cusp of widespread changes in technological development."

The 47-inch screen 3D TV costing BD1,540 employs shutter glasses-type technology, with glasses that add depth to an image by blocking one lens then the other in sync with the screen's refresh rate. It also displays regular programming and content in the high-definition 2D.

In addition, the TV is seamlessly connected to home AV devices thanks to a wireless link, while its NetCast function delivers instant streaming, via a broadband connection, of virtually limitless online content, including videos, movies and web albums. The LX9500 also supports the Multi Picture Format which enables user-created 3D content to be enjoyed on-screen without the need of a PC.
