Gulf Weekly Yacoob wins

Bahrain national team golfer Nasser Yacoob, right, won top prize in the inaugural Scratch Championship at the Royal Golf Club with a fantastic two-round combined total of 140.

Fellow national team player Abdulla Sultan claimed second place on countback from Hamad Mubarak, also a national team player. Both competitors finished on the same score of four over par. Promising junior golfer Sam Hobday was the top expat in the competition with an eight over par 152.

The 36-hole tournament started out with 60 golfers playing off a handicap of zero. The top 24 went on to battle it out in a second round where Yacoob’s four under par total was enough the claim him the title.

For golfers with a handicap of 19 or over, an 18-hole ‘Top Rabbit’ competition was also held on the Royal Golf Club’s Montgomerie championship course in the morning. Steen Davidsen emerged as the winner with a level par net 72 while Peter Thompson took second place on countback pushing Steve Middleton into third after both finished on net 74.
