NOT even the cheers of ‘come on, Scotland’ from Iain Lindsay, the recently appointed UK ambassador to Bahrain, could rescue the boys in blue from coming unstuck in the country’s crunch World Cup encounter against England.
Although the Scots took command in the first half the English put on a masterly display at the finish to run out 16-12 winners.
When it comes to representing all things British, Falkirk-born Iain had to put diplomacy aside at the Bahrain Rugby Club and show his true colours, telling the Whisperer’s friend there’s ‘no contest’ on who to support when it comes to rugby matches against the auld enemy.
Although he lived in London from the age of six to 16 he returned north of the border to finish his schooling in Edinburgh before attending Glasgow University, the same university his father attended and also the current place of learning for his son, Callum, 20, who has just started his second year studying literature and film.
Iain, 52, a proficient flanker at schoolboy level, keeps tabs on the game back home, following the fortunes of London Scottish who currently play in the Rugby Football Union Championship. His is pictured, centre, in a scrum of fans at the Bahrain Rugby Club.
